We all start with good intentions. We set goals, make promises to ourselves, and envision the person we want to become. Yet, somewhere along the way, most people fail to follow through. They lose motivation, hit obstacles, or simply stop showing up. Why does this happen?
The truth is, most people fail to achieve their goals because they don’t have a strong enough why.
Motivation is great, but it’s unreliable. It comes and goes, like a spark that flares up and then fizzles out. Life gets busy, stress builds up, and before you know it, your workouts, meal prep, or commitment to self-improvement take a back seat.
But when you have a strong why, you keep pushing even when the motivation isn’t there. Your why is your anchor—the deep, personal reason that keeps you going when things get tough.
Finding Your Why
Your why has to be bigger than just “I want to lose weight” or “I want to get stronger.” It needs to have meaning. It should hit you emotionally. It should make you pause and think.
Ask yourself:
- Why do I want to be healthier?
- Who am I doing this for?
- What happens if I don’t make a change?
- How will my life improve if I stick with this?
Maybe your why is to have the energy to play with your kids. Maybe it’s to be an example of strength and perseverance for your family. Maybe it’s to regain confidence and take back control of your life. Whatever it is, it needs to be something powerful enough to pull you through the tough days.
Keep Your Why Front and Center
Once you’ve found your why, don’t let it slip into the background. Write it down. Put it somewhere visible—on your fridge, in your gym bag, or as the wallpaper on your phone. Remind yourself daily of the reason you started.
And if you ever feel like quitting, go back to your why and ask yourself: Is stopping really an option?
I often tell our members that I don’t negotiate with myself. Just don’t give yourself an option. “This is who I am, this is what I do.”
